Due to recent news regarding fraudulent activity on a national level, we urge members to pay close attention to the debit card and credit card activity on your accounts. You have the ability to access your accounts daily with Shell Community Federal Credit Union through Shell-Tel 24 automated phone service, online account access, and www.ezcardinfo.com for your Visa credit card. A third-party payment processor, responsible for handling the transactions of over 250,000 retail stores nationwide, has experienced a security breach.
Heartland Payments Systems, Inc. has announced that its computer network has been compromised, allowing cyber criminals to access customer credit and debit card information associated with the 100 million transactions that it processes each month. They have issued a statement at www.2008breach.com.
The data includes information stored in the magnetic strip on the back of the card, including the card number and expiration date. This information can be used to create a duplicate card. When you swipe your card at a retailer, your information is transferred to a payment processor. That processor then sends it to your financial institution to complete the transaction. As Heartland is the sixth largest payment processor in the United States, it is possible that your cardholder information at any financial institution may have been compromised.
If you suspect any fraudulent activity on your Shell Community Federal Credit Union accounts, please contact us immediately by calling 618-254-0605. As we continue to receive additional updates from Visa on the extent of the security breach, we will communicate this to our membership. We are closely monitoring our fraudulent activity reporting systems and will continue to employ the latest security measures to fight fraud and protect our members' accounts.
Rest assured, your account information on file with Shell Community Federal Credit Union was not compromised. The hackers perpetrating this breach gained access to card information at Heartland Payment Systems, Inc.

Enhanced Home Banking security
Your online security has always been a top priority.
That's why Enhanced Login Security is so important. The new security service is free, easy, and most importantly, gives you extra protection from fraud and identity theft.
Enhanced Login Security identifies you as the true "owner" of your accounts. Now, not only will your password be recognized, your computer will be recognized as well. If we don't recognize your computer - you've logged in from a public computer or one you haven't used before you will be prompted to provide information that only you will know as an additional line of defense against unauthorized access to your accounts.
Enhanced Login Security is just one more way to prevent fraud, protect against identity theft, and strengthen your online security as a whole.
Credit Union Now Offers I Bonds
When it comes to buying Savings Bonds at your Credit Union, now you have a choice. The I Bond is a new type of bond designed for investors seeking to protect the purchasing power of their investment, while earning a guaranteed real rate of return. I Bonds are an accrual-type security, meaning interest is added to the bond monthly and paid when the bond is cashed. I Bonds are sold at face value. You pay $50 for a $50 bond, and it will grow in value with inflation-indexed earnings for up to 30 years. In addition to I Bonds, you can still purchase EE Bonds at the Credit Union. See a teller for details.
